August 2021 Giveaway: All the Ways to Be Smart
I’m thinking about starting a new tradition here on Dad Suggests. I think from here on out, we’re going to make August the month to give away a copy of All the Ways to Be Smart by Davina Bell and illustrated by Allison Colpoys. Frankly it’s the absolute perfect book about school for kids, and it makes for the very best back-to-school tradition I could ever possibly imagine.

If you’ve read my featured article about All the Ways to Be Smart before, you know how highly I think of this book, and why I think it’s so important for kids. I hate our nation’s obsession with standardized tests, and what it does to kids’ confidence in themselves and their ability to just focus on being kids. You also probably know how much I try to be a champion of creativity and imagination, so it’s no surprise how much I love this picture book.
This book celebrates all of our strengths and interests and differences, and makes it abundantly clear that test scores do not define us. There are many ways to be smart: playing music, being kind, studying bugs, making up games with your imagination, asking questions, climbing trees. It’s not all about how you do at the spelling bee or on the math quiz, and I can’t tell you how much I love that message for kids.
