Dad Suggests was created to share with others the many different things that we have loved sharing with our own children.

Our hope is that - by reading or visiting our children’s bookstore - you will find something special to enjoy with your own family.

The Best "Would You Rather?" Questions for Kids

The Best "Would You Rather?" Questions for Kids

One of my favorite things to do with the kids, now 8 and 5, is to tell each other jokes and riddles. Our son went through a phase when he memorized a lot of jokes and riddles to share with his friends and family - which led me to collect them into their own articles at the time. And lately we’ve come up with a new activity - asking each other funny and ridiculous “would you rather?” questions.

“Would You Rather?” is a fun game to play that appeals to our kids’ sense of humor and their creativity as well. Discover some of our family’s favorite “would you rather?” questions - and then use that imagination and start making up some of your ow…

For a while now I’ve been doing my best to pose new “would you rather?” questions to the kids every night to pass the time at shower time. As an aside, it’s turned out to be quite a good dad hack for our normally shower-reluctant son - who lately has even looked forward to shower time.

One funny result of this is the big shift in the entire dynamic of my “would you rather?” questions that took place after several nights of this. I don’t know why, but I’ve always thought that “would you rather?” questions were supposed to be a choice between two negatives, or, at the very best, two inconveniences you had to choose between. But one night my son asked why I can’t give him two fun and positive things to choose between. So, as you’ll see, our personal list is a combination of the two.

Another funny thing that I’ve noticed about “would you rather?” is the hilarious way my daughter responded to it at first. I asked her to decide between chocolate milk disappearing from the world or mac and cheese disappearing from the world, and she looked at me with big eyes and said “It’s not for real life is it?”. Shortly after that she did not want to play anymore because the whole thing is just too scary.

And if you find that you enjoy playing “would you rather?” with the kids, there are of course tons and tons of books and games available out there with limitless questions to pose each other. But I think there’s a great deal to be said about making up the questions by yourself. Not only is it a fun activity with the kids, but it inspires humor, imagination, and creativity as well. So I hope you enjoy our family’s list, and I hope it inspires you to come up with a few of your own with the kiddos. I’ll make sure to keep it updated as we come up with more good ones. And, who knows, maybe it could even help some other kids out there look forward to bath time!

Would you rather have a mouth that could only open for 1 hour a day, or only be able to sleep for 1 hour at a time?

Would you rather have teeth that fell out at some point every day and regrew every night, or eyeballs that you had to remove and soak in a jar every night?

Would you rather never need to sleep or never need to brush your teeth?

Would you rather have 8 arms and legs like a spider, or a really long neck like a giraffe?

Would you rather have the talented nose of a dog, or the talented eyes of a cat?

Would you rather lose your memory completely, or lose your sight and your hearing?

Would you rather have Halloween twice a year or Christmas twice a year?

Would you rather your pet understood everything you were saying, or that you understood what they were saying? You can’t have it both ways.

Would you rather the stories of Harry Potter (or insert favorite book) never existed or that you lost the ability to read text forever.

Would you rather music ceased to exist, or movies/TV ceased to exist?

Would you rather spend 100% of your life in a limitless VR world like the OASIS from Ready Player One, or live in the real world on an Earth with 0 trees. (You’re going to have to ignore any concerns about oxygen just pretend it works.)

Would you rather mac and cheese ceased to exist or chocolate milk ceased to exist? (Also known as a surefire way to give a 4-year-old a serious existential crisis)

Would you rather have to blend together everything you ate in a blender, but it still tasted completely normal as you drank it, or lose your sense of taste entirely.

Would you rather that the school year was exactly half as long, or that the school day was half as long?

Would you rather have real teleportation technology (allowing you to visit anywhere on Earth whenever you wanted) but you live half as long, or live a normal non-teleportation-filled life?

Would you rather that movies and shows and books were always directly uploaded entirely into your brain, allowing you to enjoy and remember and discuss the entire thing instantaneously (without spending any actual time watching), or would you keep movies and books the way they are?

Would you rather spend 1 day inside of your favorite video game or 1 year spending all day playing video games no questions asked?

Would you rather have really long toes - twice the length of your fingers - or fingers the length of your toes?

Would you rather have a magic power providing instant and complete access to all knowledge, or not? Do you really want to know everything?

Would you rather have to eat everything like a baby bird (with the helpful assistance of mom and dad eating it first) or have to take tongue baths like a cat (maybe needing to enlist the help of others to reach behind the ears!)
